Recensie Max Jury

zondag 19 juli 2015Salacgriva - Latvia

Max

The American singer-songwriter slowly steps on the stage and takes his seat by his black piano. Saying just a short “hi”, Max Jury just starts to play. He’s not trying to be statuesque or sit majestically like a lot of piano players do. With his shoulders dropped slightly and a little smirk on his face Max sings his melancholic songs truly telling a story, not only putting together words that rhyme or sounds good. He knows he is good, but Max stays humble and says a genuine “thank you” after every song the crowd goes wild to and claps their hands in excitement and appreciation.

Max Jury seems to be serious, he doesn’t smile, but if you look closely it is just an outer layer, camouflaging his distinct blackish sense of humor. He doesn’t joke, nor does he laugh, but Max’s easy-going and humoristic personality reveals in one of his songs Black Metal and the story behind it. It is about a sweet girl, who Max met in a club, but afterwards checking out her social networks’ profiles found out this kind of girl-next-door looking person was actually a Satan worshiper. So Max wrote a song about her. It is hilarious to listen to his melancholic voice and delicate piano play telling such an ironic and slightly ludicrous story.

Personally we would prefer Max Jury on a smaller stage, maybe even in a local pub or at a friend’s place. He is not the artist you can show-off all of your dance moves or get crazy moving to the boogie rhythms, he is a storyteller. You really have to pay attention to the lyrics to understand what this 23 years old one’s soul is all about.
