Recensie Warpaint

Warpaint

Formed on St. Valentine‘s day by two childhood friends - it might seem such a girly thing. And it is. Warpaint is a girl quartet influenced by all kinds of musical styles gathering them up in their ladylike and almost hypnotic manner.

Soundwise Warpaint have been compared to Cocteau Twins and Siouxsie, but we see a little bit of girl grunge pioneers Hole in their attitude although more hipsterish and psychedelic. With hypnotic sounds the girls with Emily Kokal in lead drag the audience to psychedelic approach of the rock developed from many other musical styles. A hint of soul, jazz and R&B was recognizable.

Performing powerfully in the extremely stormy weather and embracing their femininity, this girl power band made all the doubts about putting them on the main stage disappear. When Warpaint started the song Undertow from their debut studio album The Fool released in 2010, the crowd went wild. Although some technical difficulties appeared the girls didn‘t get confused and weren‘t afraid to demand technical support for solutions they believe which were the best. Continuing with hits like No Way Out and Keep It Healthy the performers took listeners to a more expansive and Siren-like side of themselves. A little bit of The Pixies song‘s Where is my mind? hypnotic charm curled through Warpaint‘s whole performance, adding a new protective layer of rawness and tenderness to their sound.

We would tend to believe that this band is worth keeping in mind. Not only because of their complex sound and encouraging feminine lyrics, but also because each and every one of the band members know exactly what they want and isn‘t afraid to grab it, throwing all thoughts about permission asking in the trash. Warpaint is the one to watch and seek their name into band listings in festivals‘ line-ups.
